Offence Summary

Michael O’Meara was jailed for 12 years after pleading guilty to raping a woman at knifepoint in Coventry in 1989, a crime solved through advanced DNA analysis of cold case evidence.

Full Description

A man from Coventry has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for a historic rape committed over three decades ago, thanks to breakthroughs in forensic technology.

The attack occurred on 15 July 1989 in Silver Street, Coventry, when the victim, who had been out in the city centre with friends, was walking down the street searching for a taxi. Michael O’Meara, then in his early twenties, dragged her into a secluded area and raped her at knifepoint. At the time, despite forensic evidence being collected from the scene, no suspect was identified, and the case remained unsolved for more than 35 years.

In 2024, as part of a cold case review by West Midlands Police, the original forensic samples were re-examined using modern DNA profiling techniques. The analysis produced a full DNA match linking the evidence directly to O’Meara, who had prior convictions for sexual assault in the 1990s. Following the match, O’Meara was arrested. Although he denied the offence during his police interview, he ultimately pleaded guilty to rape on 7 November 2024.

On 9 December 2024, at Warwick Crown Court, the 58-year-old O’Meara was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment. Detective Constable Ryan Ahern, who led the investigation for West Midlands Police, described the attack as 'a harrowing and horrific attack which O’Meara truly believed he had gotten away with.' He added, 'Thanks to significant leaps forward in forensic science over the last four decades, we were able to re-examine the evidence and prove his guilt. On behalf of the whole team involved in this investigation, we hope the survivor of this attack can find some closure knowing justice has finally been done.'

The case underscores the commitment of West Midlands Police to pursuing justice in historic sexual offences, with plans to expand cold case reviews for rapes and serious sexual assaults in the coming year.
