Offence Summary

Suleman Mukaish pleaded guilty to raping a woman in a Worthing car park and faces a substantial custodial sentence following the court's assessment of his dangerousness.

Full Description

Suleman Mukaish, residing on Cambridge Road in Worthing, West Sussex, admitted to the rape of a woman in the Lyndhurst Road car park on March 11, 2023. The incident, described by Judge Christine Laing KC as 'effectively a stranger rape,' occurred while Mukaish was cycling home from work after studying computer science in the UK, where he completed a Master's degree and obtained a work visa.

At Lewes Crown Court on April 13, 2024, Mukaish, assisted by an Urdu interpreter, entered his guilty plea. Prosecutor Chetna Patel informed the court that Mukaish had no previous convictions and was apprehended at Gatwick Airport attempting to board a one-way flight to Pakistan shortly after the attack. Defence counsel Zacharias Miah highlighted Mukaish's good character, emphasising his academic achievements and employment status in the UK.

Judge Laing ordered a pre-sentence report to evaluate Mukaish's dangerousness, stating that he should be under no illusion about the inevitability of a substantial custodial sentence. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 15, 2024, at the same court. This case was reported by The Argus, with coverage from senior reporter Lucy Hunt, underscoring the severity of stranger rapes in public spaces within the community.
