Offence Summary

Victor Dembovskis raped and murdered 17-year-old Jeshma Raithatha in Greenford, west London, in 2005, for which he received three life sentences, and he died in HMP Frankland, County Durham, on December 20, 2023, while refusing cancer treatment.

Full Description

In 2005, Victor Dembovskis, a car wash worker originally from Latvia, committed a horrific crime in Greenford, west London. On a day just before her 18th birthday, 17-year-old Jeshma Raithatha was walking home from school along a footpath when Dembovskis ambushed her from a hidden 'den' he had prepared. He raped and murdered her, leaving her body undiscovered for eight days until it was found in the area.

Following the attack, Dembovskis fled the United Kingdom, returning to his native Latvia to evade capture. However, his escape was short-lived after investigators discovered he had inadvertently left his keys at the murder scene, providing a crucial lead. This evidence facilitated his extradition back to the UK, where he faced justice for the brutal offences.

Dembovskis was convicted of rape and murder, resulting in three life sentences. He was imprisoned at HMP Frankland in County Durham, a high-security facility. While serving his sentence, Dembovskis was diagnosed with cancer but refused treatment, opting only for pain relief. An inquest held at Crook Coroners' Court on January 29, 2024, revealed that he died on December 20, 2023, at the prison. Coroners' officer Dawn Carter stated during the hearing: 'I understand the circumstances to be that Mr Dembovskis was suffering from cancer. A post-mortem examination at Newcastle RVI mortuary gave the cause of death as unknown pending histology and toxicology.' She added: 'He was refusing treatment for cancer, but was accepting pain relief.' The inquest was adjourned and scheduled for further mention on June 2, 2024, at 1pm.

This tragic case underscores the severity of Dembovskis's crimes, which shocked the community in west London. The article, reported by The Northern Echo and drawing from archival sources, highlights the ongoing investigations into multiple inmate deaths at HMP Frankland over a short period in December 2023, though no direct links were established. Prisons and Probation Ombudsman Adrian Usher noted he would examine any 'themes or any correlation among the deaths,' which occurred between December 17 and 25, 2023.
