Offence Summary

Oliver Squires pleaded guilty to making and possessing indecent images of children across Categories A, B, and C, discovered on his phone during an unrelated police investigation.

Full Description

At Chester Magistrates' Court on 17 February 2025, Oliver Squires, a 20-year-old resident of Ellesmere Port, appeared for a sentencing hearing following his guilty pleas to serious sexual offences involving indecent images.

Squires admitted to three counts of making indecent images, encompassing the most severe Category A material, as well as Category B and C, alongside one charge of possession. The offences came to light in January 2025 when Cheshire Police arrested Squires for unrelated matters that ultimately did not proceed to prosecution. During the examination of his mobile phone as part of that investigation, officers uncovered a total of 12 illicit images: four in Category A, three in Category B, and five in Category C.

Prosecutor Nigel Jones informed the court that magistrates possessed sufficient sentencing powers, ranging from custodial sentences to medium-level community orders. He noted that Squires had no prior convictions and highlighted an application for a Sexual Harm Prevention Order under standard terms to mitigate future risks.

Defending Squires, who resides on Dublin Croft in Great Sutton, solicitor Sarah Hamblett did not oppose the prevention order but requested the removal of any conditions restricting contact with children, emphasising that the case pertained solely to image offences rather than direct contact. Hamblett detailed Squires' challenging personal history, including a diagnosis of diabetic ketoacidosis at age 16 that necessitated a three-week induced coma. During this period, he suffered the tragic loss of his father to a heart attack and subsequently had to relearn how to walk. She stressed that Squires had received no counselling or medication to address this trauma.

In light of these circumstances, Hamblett called for a pre-sentence report. Chairman of the bench, Andrew Merrill, agreed, ordering an all-options report and indicating the possibility of referring the case to the Crown Court if magistrates' sentencing powers proved insufficient. Squires was granted bail and scheduled to return to Chester Magistrates' Court on 17 March 2025 for sentencing.

The case was reported by the Chester and District Standard, with coverage by chief reporter Barrie White, underscoring the court's focus on balancing Squires' mitigating personal factors against the gravity of the indecent images offences.
