Mohammad Bahaadeen was convicted of attempted rape and assault following a trial at Durham Crown Court. The offences occurred in the Consett area of County Durham in 2022.

On 12 January, the sixth day of his trial, Bahaadeen failed to appear at court without explanation. The case continued in his absence, and the jury found him guilty of attempted rape of a woman aged 16 or over and assault by beating. He was cleared of a charge of intentional strangulation.

Judge Richard Bennett issued a bench warrant for Bahaadeen’s arrest. The 45‑year‑old, of Claremont Road, Newcastle, remained at large for several months. At a mention hearing in mid‑April, the court heard he was still missing.

At a further hearing on 1 May, the judge was told Bahaadeen had been rearrested. Judge Bennett said the development was “positive” and stated: “He vanished on the last day of his trial. We’ll see what happens and where he’s brought to, and, at some stage, he’ll be brought before me for sentence.” The case was adjourned to a date to be fixed for sentencing.
