Offence Summary

Terence Thatcher, a registered sex offender from Arlesey, was jailed for possessing and distributing over 1,100 indecent images of children, along with prohibited and extremely pornographic images, breaching his sexual harm prevention order.

Full Description

A paedophile from Arlesey, Terence Thatcher, has been sentenced to prison for possessing and distributing indecent images of children. The 56-year-old resident of Bury Mead was arrested in February 2023 following a warrant executed by Bedfordshire Police at his home address.

Officers seized a mobile phone from Thatcher's possession that contained more than 1,100 indecent images of children. Among these were two prohibited images and five classified as extremely pornographic. Further examination revealed chat streams evidencing that Thatcher had shared these images with other users online.

Thatcher, who was released from prison in 2019 and subject to a sexual harm prevention order, failed to notify his offender manager about acquiring a new phone, in direct breach of the order's conditions. The device was also logged into various social media accounts without the required permission, compounding the violations.

Investigation Officer Emma Shipton from Bedfordshire Police’s Internet Child Abuse Investigation Team commented: “Viewing, possessing and distributing indecent images of children is by no means a victimless crime. It causes and propagates real harm to the children concerned, as they are abused and exploited in such a vile and appalling way, and people like Thatcher share this disgusting abuse online for other individuals to view.”

On 19 May 2023, Thatcher pleaded guilty at court to charges of making, distributing, and possessing indecent images of children, possessing prohibited and pornographic images, and breaching his sexual harm prevention order. He received a custodial sentence of two years and eight months, with an additional three years on licence. An indefinite sexual harm prevention order was also imposed.

The case was reported by The Comet, based on information from Bedfordshire Police, highlighting the ongoing efforts to combat online child exploitation in the region.
