Full Description

Rita Oldham, from Clipstone, Mansfield in Nottinghamshire, was convicted alongside her husband Robert for the sexual abuse of three children spanning 15 years. The couple's offences included rape and indecent assault, with the abuse persisting due to failures in local safeguarding services. Initial allegations were reported to Nottinghamshire Police in 1997, but it took until January 2013 for the pair to be brought to justice.

The Nottinghamshire Safeguarding Children Board (NSCB) serious case review exposed how children’s complaints were ignored or dismissed by professionals. The report noted a 'lack of professional curiosity and willingness to intervene and take decisive action', leading to an overall failure by agencies such as the city and county councils to protect the vulnerable children. This systemic oversight enabled the prolonged abuse.

Rita Oldham was sentenced to six years' imprisonment at Nottingham Crown Court in January 2013 for her role in the rapes and indecent assaults. Like her husband, she was described by police as 'cold, selfish and utterly lacking in remorse'. Superintendent Helen Chamberlain of Nottinghamshire Police apologised for the delays, saying: 'The victims in this case were let down by a system which allowed the abuse to continue, and for that we offer our sincere apologies.'

The impact on the victims was profound, as one survivor recounted to the BBC: 'The abuse had affected most of her life. I had a mental breakdown and tried to commit suicide. I tried to take an overdose when I was 12 years old, I think. The school just put it down to bullying - nobody listened to what I had to say.' The case, reviewed over a nine-year period, prompted calls for better inter-agency cooperation to prevent similar failures in the future.

The convictions highlighted critical lapses in child protection in Nottinghamshire, with the NSCB report serving as a key source for understanding the timeline and institutional shortcomings. External links to the NSCB and Nottinghamshire Police provide further details on the case.
