Full Description

Jamie Webster, a 44-year-old man from Salhouse, Norfolk, was sentenced at Norwich Crown Court on 7 May 2021 to a total of six years and six months' imprisonment after pleading guilty to rape and possession of a prohibited weapon.

The incident occurred on 12 October 2020 at a property in Norwich, where Webster was present with a woman who suffered from a medical condition causing multiple seizures. During one such episode, the woman lost functioning of her body and drifted in and out of consciousness. While she was in this vulnerable state, Webster raped her. The victim awoke to find him on top of her, though she was unable to feel her legs and was not in a fully conscious state to consent to the act.

In the days following the assault, the victim confided in a colleague and close friends, leading to statements being made to the police. Webster was arrested on 18 October 2020. A subsequent search of the property uncovered a stun gun, which he was prohibited from possessing.

The victim provided a poignant statement to the court, describing the profound impact of the rape on her life. 'I couldn’t believe what he was doing to me. Due to my medical state, I have then lost consciousness again, with this all occurring without him knowing that I knew what he had done to me. From that moment, my life fell to pieces around me.' She further explained that the assault had changed her life forever, leaving her in pieces.

Detective Constable Tom Harvey of Norfolk Police, who worked closely with the victim, welcomed the sentence. 'I welcome the sentence and I hope this sends a clear indication that the Norfolk Constabulary will pursue justice against perpetrators of such heinous crimes. Having worked closely with the victim, I am fully aware of the distress this incident caused her and I commend her for the strength and courage she has shown throughout.' The case was handled by Norfolk Police, highlighting their commitment to supporting victims of sexual offences.
