Offence Summary

David Munro, a convicted paedophile, was jailed for sending child abuse images to an undercover police officer while using the online alias 'Paedo Dave', breaching a prior Sexual Offences Prevention Order.

Full Description

David Munro, a 56-year-old resident of Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland, was sentenced at Paisley Sheriff Court for committing serious sexual offences involving child abuse material. The crimes occurred between January and April 2023, just three months after his release from a previous prison term for similar offences. Munro, who had been subject to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order since 2018, used Russian-based websites to communicate with what he believed was another paedophile, but was in fact an undercover law enforcement officer posing as 'Jason'.

Munro adopted the username PaedoDave25 and openly boasted about his sexual attraction to young girls aged between three and 10 years old. He expressed interest in 'hardcore' abuse images and sent emails containing links to child abuse images stored online. Additionally, he failed to declare to police that he possessed an electronic device capable of internet access, in direct violation of his existing order. The court heard that Munro had a history of such behaviour; in 2023, he was jailed for 27 months after admitting to distributing indecent photographs of children via his Xbox, and in 2018, he received another 27-month sentence for sharing movies depicting the sexual abuse of youngsters.

Prosecutor Abigail McKenna detailed how Munro engaged in conversations with the undercover operative, discussing child abuse and sharing illicit material. Sheriff Brian Mohan, presiding over the case, remarked during sentencing: 'You know custody is the realistic disposal here, because of the gravity of the offences and your previous convictions. You were released only three months before this took place.' The court was informed that Munro had been in contact with other paedophiles worldwide, further highlighting the ongoing risk he posed.

  • Munro pleaded guilty to three charges: sending messages discussing child abuse, distributing child abuse images, and breaching a Sexual Offences Prevention Order.
  • The offences took place at his home in Johnstone.
  • Prior to this, Munro had been placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for 10 years following his 2018 conviction.

The sentencing reflects the severity of Munro's repeated offending, with the court imposing measures to protect the public. This case was reported by The Scottish Sun, drawing on court proceedings at Paisley Sheriff Court.
