Offence Summary

Edward Tenniswood raped and murdered 20-year-old India Chipchase after luring her to his home, claiming her death was accidental during consensual sex, and was convicted of both offences.

Full Description

In 2016, in Northampton, 20-year-old India Chipchase, who aspired to become a paramedic, became separated from her friends after drinking outside a nightclub. She was approached by 52-year-old Edward Tenniswood, whom she had not met before, and he led her back to his home where he raped and killed her.

During the trial for rape and murder, Tenniswood claimed India's death occurred accidentally due to his 'overeagerness to please her' in what he described as a consensual kinky sex session. This narrative was widely repeated in news reports, similar to other cases highlighted by the campaign. However, the court rejected his claims, convicting him of both rape and murder.

Tenniswood was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder with a minimum term of 30 years, and 12 years concurrently for the rape. Notably, he had been arrested for another rape just 11 days prior but had no previous convictions. This case underscores the prevalence of victim-blaming defences in sexual violence trials.
