Full Description

A man from Tumble in Carmarthenshire, David Prothero, aged 39, has been sentenced to 10.5 years in prison for a series of sexual offences committed against children. The case, investigated by Dyfed-Powys Police, came to light through the courage of four young victims who reported the abuse.

Prothero had previously pleaded guilty to the following charges: two counts of oral rape of a female aged 13 years old, four counts of engaging in sexual activity with a female aged under 18, four counts of sexual assault on a female, as well as ill-treatment of a child and assault by beating. These offences involved the abuse of a position of trust, occurring in settings where the victims expected to feel safe.

Detective Inspector Rebecca Thomas of Carmarthenshire’s Rape Investigation Team described the case as disturbing, stating: “This was a disturbing case involving a man who abused a position of trust against four young, innocent victims. No person, especially a child, should ever suffer abuse in a setting where they expect to feel safe.” She highlighted the bravery of the victims, noting: “The bravery shown by the victims in this case must be recognised. Their courage to speak out against this abuser is ultimately what has put David Prothero in prison today.”

One poignant moment during the proceedings was when a victim remarked, ‘he can’t control me anymore’ upon Prothero entering his guilty pleas. The sentencing took place yesterday, following the publication of the police statement on 6 January 2026. DI Thomas emphasised the police's commitment to supporting victims, adding: “We have a dedicated team of investigators, specially trained in crimes of this nature, who will support you every step of the way. We are compassionate, and we are capable.”

The case underscores the importance of reporting such crimes, with the victims praised as a credit to themselves and their families. Prothero’s imprisonment provides justice and a step towards freedom for those affected.
