Offence Summary

Peter Raymond Davies, a convicted sex offender, was recalled to prison after failing to notify police about a secret online dating account he created, breaching his sex offender registration requirements.

Full Description

Peter Raymond Davies, a 47-year-old man from South Cumbria who had relocated to Carlisle, found himself back behind bars after admitting to breaching the terms of his sex offender registration. The incident came to light when police discovered that Davies had created an online account on an adult dating website without informing authorities, as required under his registration conditions.

Davies was initially placed on the sex offender register in July 2023 following his conviction for attempting to incite a female child to engage in sexual activity and attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child. These offences stemmed from communications he had in March 2023, when an online child abuse activist group alerted police to his activities. Investigations revealed that Davies had been engaging in sexually explicit conversations with a person he believed to be a 14-year-old girl, despite the decoy profile clearly stating her age. He continued these interactions even after being informed of her age, leading to his arrest and subsequent guilty plea during police interviews.

For the original offences, Davies was sentenced at Carlisle's Rickergate court to two years and four months in prison, along with a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order. He was released on licence but remained subject to the sex offender notification requirements. Temporary Detective Sergeant Stewart Glendinning commented at the time on the seriousness of the case, stating: "Peter Davies engaged in online conversations with a person he believed to be a 14-year-old girl. Despite the decoy profile informing Davies of her age, he continued to engage in sexually explicit conversation. Fortunately, there was no actual 14-year-old girl but that does not dilute the seriousness of his offending."

In the recent breach, police confronted Davies about the undisclosed dating account, to which he claimed he believed the site was merely a social media platform. A probation officer informed District Judge Philip Holden during the hearing that Davies had been recalled to prison to serve the remainder of his 20-month jail term, with release not due until November 2025. The judge imposed an additional two weeks' imprisonment for the breach, though he noted that the law prevented this from extending beyond the licence recall period. Judge Holden warned Davies sternly: "You will be going to prison for longer and longer if you continue to breach these orders." The case was heard at Carlisle's Rickergate court, with reporting by Phil Coleman for News and Star.
