Offence Summary

Tenias Mungwari kidnapped a woman in Norwich and subjected her to multiple sexual assaults, for which he was jailed for 18 years and placed on the sex offenders register for life. He was also sentenced for maintaining a sexual relationship with a vulnerable female patient he cared for.

Full Description

A 47-year-old man from Norwich has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for a series of predatory sexual offences, including the kidnap and sexual assault of a woman walking home from a night out.

The incident occurred in October 2022, when the victim was forced into a vehicle by Tenias Mungwari as she made her way home in Norwich city centre. CCTV footage captured Mungwari turning his car around upon spotting the vulnerable woman, after which he abducted her and drove her to a nearby home where he carried out sexual assault by penetration and two counts of sexual assault. Norfolk Police traced the offender through his vehicle's licence plate visible on the CCTV, leading to his arrest shortly after the attack.

Mungwari, of Sleaford Green in Norwich, was found guilty at Norwich Crown Court of kidnap, sexual assault by penetration, and two counts of sexual assault. In addition to the primary offences, he received sentencing for engaging in a sexual relationship with a female patient suffering from mental illness, whom he had been responsible for caring for. The court heard evidence of Mungwari's lack of remorse throughout the investigation and trial, with Detective Inspector Kevin Barber of Norfolk Police describing him as an 'extremely dangerous individual' who had been 'patrolling the streets looking for a vulnerable female'.

The sentencing, which took place on 26th August 2023, ensures Mungwari will serve 18 years behind bars and be placed on the sex offenders register for life. This case underscores the predatory nature of the crimes and the swift action taken by Norfolk Police to bring the perpetrator to justice, as detailed in reports from Greatest Hits Radio Norfolk.
