Gary McVeigh, a 48-year-old resident of Winsford in Cheshire, was sentenced to 14 months in prison at Chester Crown Court for possessing, downloading, and distributing a large quantity of indecent images of child sex abuse. The case came to light during a routine compliance check at his home address on Delamere Street approximately eight months prior to his sentencing.
During the search, Cheshire Police discovered a laptop, mobile phone, and memory sticks containing 12,950 indecent images categorised as A, B, and C, with Category A images representing the most severe content, including depictions of children being tortured, raped, and abused. Investigations revealed that McVeigh had not only downloaded this material but also distributed over 120,000 images to a network of other paedophiles. Additionally, he was found in possession of extreme pornographic images of animals and prohibited images of children.
McVeigh pleaded guilty to all charges on 16 September at Chester Crown Court. His sentencing occurred on 6 January before Judge Michael Leeming, who imposed the custodial sentence of one year and two months. As part of the ruling, McVeigh was made subject to a sexual harm prevention order and required to remain on the sex offenders register for 10 years.
This was not McVeigh's first encounter with the law for sexual offences. He had previously received a prison sentence in 2016 for similar crimes involving indecent images. More recently, in 2024, he was imprisoned again for breaching his sexual harm prevention order, during which he was found with unregistered devices and a number of used and unused nappies.
Detective Sergeant Helen Wrigley of Cheshire Police commented on the case, stating: 'As a registered sex offender, McVeigh was subjected to a number of vigorous checks on a regular basis to prevent reoffending and ensure he was keeping to his conditions. He was well aware of these checks, but despite this he continued to offend, downloading and sharing thousands of indecent images which showed vulnerable children being tortured, raped and abused. Thankfully, through our effective monitoring, McVeigh was quickly arrested and is now facing the consequences of his actions. I hope it reassures people that we do carefully monitor registered sex offenders in the community and take action when a breach is discovered.' The case was reported by the Chester Standard, highlighting the ongoing efforts of Cheshire Police to safeguard children from such exploitation.
