Full Description

A man from North Norfolk has been imprisoned for a series of child sex offences spanning almost 30 years. Brett Saunders, aged 39, appeared at King's Lynn Crown Court on 1 May 2025, where he received a total sentence of 21 years in prison, with an additional eight years on licence. He had previously pleaded guilty to 19 counts involving rape and sexual assault perpetrated against four child victims.

The offences, which took place in the Norfolk area, began as early as 1995 and continued until 2024, demonstrating a prolonged pattern of abuse. Saunders was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life and subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order to restrict his future behaviour and protect the public.

During the sentencing hearing, impact statements from the victims were read to the court, highlighting the profound and lasting trauma caused by Saunders' actions. One victim described him as "a master manipulator", stating, "We all fell for his lies." Another recounted the emotional toll, saying, "When it all came out it was like all the wounds were re-opened at the exact same moment. It was like I was reliving all the abuse all over again. It proved I was never ok, I was just good at hiding. I worry that you never really know someone. Bad people look like you and me, they don't have horns or green skin, you just don't know." A third victim spoke of having their world ripped apart and being robbed of their childhood, yet affirmed their resilience by declaring themselves a survivor rather than a victim.

Detective Constable Natalie Purcell, from Norfolk Constabulary, commended the victims' bravery in her statement following the sentencing. She noted that Saunders' offending "has spanned nearly 30 years and would have remained undetected had it not for the courage of the first victim coming forward which has then given further victims the strength to also come forward." Purcell emphasised the devastating impact on the victims and their families, expressing hope that the sentence would bring some measure of justice. The case was investigated and prosecuted by Norfolk Constabulary, with the court's decision underscoring the severity of the crimes committed over such an extended period.
