Offence Summary

Matthew Jones, a registered sex offender, was jailed for 12 months after breaching his sex offender notification requirements and sexual harm prevention order by starting a relationship involving a child and failing to disclose his mobile phone usage.

Full Description

Matthew Jones, a 30-year-old man from The Parade in Neath, South Wales, was sentenced at Swansea Crown Court for multiple breaches of his sex offender obligations. Previously convicted of a child sex offence and jailed at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court in December 2023, Jones was subject to strict sex offender notification requirements and a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO).

The breaches occurred between October 20, 2025, and November 20, 2025, when Jones entered into a new relationship with a woman whose home housed a child. He stayed at the property for more than 12 hours, directly violating one of the conditions of his notification requirements. Additionally, Jones failed to inform South Wales Police about possessing a mobile phone with internet access and deleted his search history, further contravening the SHPO.

During the court hearing, Jones admitted to the offences. Prosecutor details highlighted the seriousness of the breaches, noting that Jones' actions posed a risk to child safety. Judge remarks, as reported by the South Wales Guardian, emphasised the importance of compliance with such orders to protect the public. Jones was ultimately sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment, reinforcing the judicial stance on sex offender accountability.

The case was investigated by South Wales Police, who emphasised their commitment to monitoring registered sex offenders. This incident underscores the ongoing enforcement of protective measures in Wales.
