Paul Aird, a former court security guard, was convicted of conducting a prolonged campaign of rape and sexual abuse against four children spanning over 20 years, using them for his sexual gratification in his car and at his home.

Full Description

A former court security guard, Paul Aird, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for a series of horrific sexual offences against four children. The 49-year-old, who worked at Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court, was found guilty following a five-day trial at Teesside Crown Court in July, where he was convicted of seven charges of rape, two of buggery, one of attempted rape, and three of indecent assault. These crimes occurred between December 1981 and February 2002, targeting two boys and two girls whom Aird abused in his car and at his home on Oxford Road, Hartlepool.

The court heard that Aird orchestrated a 'campaign of rape' driven purely by his desire for sexual gratification, showing no shame, remorse, or compassion as he shifted his attentions from one victim to another. In one particularly manipulative instance, Aird instructed one of the girls to remain silent about the abuse for years, claiming that the revelation would kill her ill mother. Despite his vehement denials during the trial—alleging that the accusations were fabricated by his former wife’s family after his remarriage to a younger woman—the jury rejected his claims and delivered guilty verdicts on the majority of counts. He was acquitted of indecent assaults on two women at a barbecue and a Christmas party, and Judge Evans directed acquittals on one additional buggery charge and an indecent assault.

Sentencing took place at Durham Crown Court, where the judge addressed Aird directly: 'You turned your attentions from one victim to another without any shame, remorse or compassion, using each to satisfy your sexual gratification. It’s a tribute to them that they have managed to make something of their lives, notwithstanding what happened to them.' Even after the convictions, Aird continued to deny the offences, a stance echoed by his defence counsel, Robin Denny, who stated: 'There’s nothing I can say about the offences. He still denies them and his wife stands by him.' Denny also noted that Aird was due to attend his father’s funeral immediately following the sentencing.

In addition to the 15-year custodial sentence, Aird was ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for life and was issued a sexual offences prevention order imposing various restrictions. He is also barred from working with children indefinitely. The case was investigated by Cleveland Police’s Hartlepool child abuse investigation unit, with Detective Sergeant Matt Mason commenting post-sentencing: 'The victims, who are now all adults, are delighted with this outcome.' This conviction underscores the long-term impact of historical child sex offences and the justice system's commitment to holding perpetrators accountable, even decades later.
