Offence Summary

Jason Newall was jailed for six-and-a-half years after committing serious sexual offences against a victim, including strangling her, slashing her with a blade, and threatening her, with video evidence found on his mobile phone.

Full Description

Jason Newall, a 26-year-old man from Bradford, was sentenced at Bradford Crown Court for serious sexual offences that left his victim feeling 'disgusted and used'. The court heard details of Newall's abusive actions, which included strangling the victim, slashing her with a blade, and issuing threats against her. These acts caused severe psychological harm, leading the victim to self-harm and suffer from depression.

In her victim impact statement, the woman described the profound impact of the offences, stating she felt 'disgusting and used'. Evidence presented in court included video footage of Newall having sex with the victim, discovered on his mobile phone. Newall, formerly of Holme Wood in Bradford, initially denied the charges and provided an 'elaborate excuse'. He went to trial, which was aborted, but ultimately pleaded guilty on the afternoon of the re-trial.

Appearing via video link from HMP Leeds, Newall expressed genuine shame and remorse during mitigation. His Honour Judge Colin Burn imposed a sentence of 78 months' imprisonment, equivalent to six years and six months. The judge noted that Newall had already served three years and one month in custody, leaving approximately two months to serve before release on licence. As a result of the conviction, Newall will be required to register as a sex offender for life.

The case was reported by The Telegraph & Argus, with details emerging from the court proceedings in Bradford, West Yorkshire. West Yorkshire Police provided an image of Newall in connection with the case.
