Offence Summary

Kevin Woodhouse pleaded guilty to attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and attempting to meet a girl under 16 after grooming her. He was committed to Norwich Crown Court for sentencing due to the seriousness of the offences.

Full Description

A 71-year-old man from Filby, Norfolk, has pleaded guilty to serious child sexual offences involving grooming and attempts to meet a minor for sexual purposes. Kevin Woodhouse, residing on Main Road in Filby, appeared at Great Yarmouth Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, where he faced charges of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and attempting to meet a girl under 16 following grooming.

The court heard that between 26 August 2024 and 29 August 2024, Woodhouse intentionally attempted to communicate with a girl under 16 for the purpose of obtaining sexual gratification. The communications were described as sexually graphic in nature. Prosecuting, John Cooper explained that the defendant contacted the girl and engaged in conversations that became increasingly sexualised. 'She said on several occasions that she was 14,' Cooper stated, highlighting the victim's explicit disclosure of her age during the interactions.

Furthermore, on 29 August 2024, Woodhouse met or communicated with the girl on one or more occasions, with the intention of committing sexual activity with her during or after the meeting. Cooper noted the gravity of the case, stating, 'This is not suitable for this court to deal with,' underscoring the severity of the allegations.

In mitigation, defence representative Arthur Balls informed the court that Woodhouse had no previous convictions. However, the magistrates determined that the serious nature of the offences exceeded their sentencing powers. As a result, Woodhouse was committed to Norwich Crown Court for full sentencing, scheduled for 9 March 2025. He was granted conditional bail, subject to restrictions including no possession of electronic devices with internet access and no paid or voluntary work involving contact with individuals under 18.

The case was reported by the Great Yarmouth Mercury, with proceedings taking place at Great Yarmouth Magistrates' Court. Woodhouse was captured leaving the courthouse following the hearing.
