James Glendenning, a 93-year-old former constable with West Midlands Police, has died in prison while serving a lengthy sentence for historic sex offences committed against young girls in the 1970s. Glendenning, originally from Reddish in Stockport, was convicted following a trial at Manchester Crown Court in 2018, where he was found guilty of one charge of rape, 10 counts of indecent assault, and four counts of indecency with a child. The offences, described by Judge David Stockdale KC as 'utterly depraved and utterly wicked', involved the abuse of two young girls, with some acts taking place while Glendenning was serving as a police officer, representing a profound betrayal of trust.
The court heard harrowing details of the crimes, though much was too disturbing to report in full by the Manchester Evening News . One victim had been threatened with the cane if she disclosed the abuse, and another screamed in pain and begged Glendenning to stop during the assaults. Judge Stockdale emphasised the vulnerability of the victims, stating: 'The girls submitted to you because they had no choice. You now bring disgrace to your former profession as a serving police officer. It's difficult to imagine a more gross betrayal of trust placed in you by innocent young girls.'
Glendenning's criminal history came to light after one victim reported the abuse to police in the 1980s, but her account was initially dismissed. The investigation was relaunched in 2015 following another complaint, leading to Glendenning's arrest and trial. During the proceedings, he denied all charges and was accused of lying repeatedly—to police in the mid-1980s, during interviews in 2015 and 2016, and to the jury in the witness box. The jury rejected his defences, accepting the victims' accounts as truthful. Glendenning, who had a prior career in the Royal Artillery before joining the police for 17 years, was sentenced in November 2018 to 23 years' imprisonment, with the judge noting that as a frail pensioner, he would likely spend the remainder of his life in custody.
Glendenning passed away on 29 October 2023, as confirmed by the Prison Service. A spokesperson stated: 'Prisoner James Glendenning died on October 29, 2023. As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will investigate.' The case underscores failures in earlier police responses and highlights the long-term pursuit of justice for historic sexual abuse victims.
