Offence Summary

David Griffiths, a former West Yorkshire Police officer, pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images of children being sexually abused and an extreme pornographic image, receiving an eight-month suspended jail sentence and 15 hours of unpaid work.

Full Description

David Griffiths, a 69-year-old former police officer from Wakefield, has been sentenced for possessing indecent images of children being sexually abused. Griffiths, who served as an officer with West Yorkshire Police before transitioning to a civilian role within the force, pleaded guilty at Leeds Crown Court to three counts of possessing indecent images and one charge of possession of an extreme pornographic image.

The offences came to light following an investigation by West Yorkshire Police's Professional Standards Department. The images were accessed by Griffiths between June 2016 and January 2018. Upon discovery of the material, Griffiths was immediately arrested and suspended from his duties. He subsequently resigned from the force as the investigation progressed.

At the sentencing hearing on Wednesday, Griffiths was handed an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months. In addition to the suspended term, he was ordered to complete 15 hours of unpaid work. The court described the images as 'vile', highlighting the abhorrent nature of the content involving the sexual abuse of children.

Ch Supt Julie Sykes, head of West Yorkshire Police's Professional Standards Department, commented on the case, stating: 'West Yorkshire Police requires all its officers and staff to adhere to the highest standards and any alleged criminal behaviour is fully investigated, as has been the case here. Griffiths' behaviour in accessing such vile material was absolutely abhorrent and he was arrested and suspended as soon as these matters came to our attention.'

This case underscores the rigorous standards enforced within West Yorkshire Police to maintain public trust and integrity among its personnel. The force's swift action in investigating and addressing the allegations demonstrates its commitment to upholding professional conduct.
