Offence Summary

A London man who posed as a taxi driver in Brighton to kidnap and rape a 19-year-old woman.

Full Description

Ruckling Ramsay, a 61-year-old man from London, was found guilty of multiple sexual offences after posing as a taxi driver in Brighton to abduct and rape a vulnerable 19-year-old woman.

On 3 July 2022, Ramsay was driving his silver Mercedes around Brighton city centre when he picked up the victim. He pressured her into sniffing white powder three times before subjecting her to a four-hour ordeal during which he raped and sexually assaulted her multiple times. The attacks took place as he drove her to various locations including Shoreham Power Station and remote areas on the South Downs, with one assault occurring at knifepoint.

The victim managed to text a friend at around 9.30am, who tracked her location and helped her escape when Ramsay's car was followed. Sussex Police were notified, and Ramsay was traced through his vehicle's registration number and subsequently arrested. Officers found condoms, Viagra, and lubricant in his car, along with items confirming the victim had been present. Phone location data showed he had been prowling Brighton city centre and had searched for solicitors after the incident.

Ramsay, of Osprey Close in Wanstead, London, was charged with three counts of rape, kidnap, and sexual assault by penetration. A separate Metropolitan Police investigation revealed he had abducted another victim and subjected her to non-consensual sexual acts in his vehicle. DNA evidence from the victim's clothing matched Ramsay, and vehicle tracking corroborated the victim's account.

At Inner London Crown Court on 21 May 2026, a jury found Ramsay guilty of all counts after less than two hours of deliberation. He was remanded in custody to appear for sentencing on 15 July 2026. The court also heard bad character evidence from a victim of a similar 2009 incident in which Ramsay was the prime suspect, though that case was never formally charged.
