Full Description

Haval Omer, a 32-year-old pizza takeaway owner from Sunderland, targeted vulnerable women over a six-month period, luring them with offers of lifts before subjecting them to brutal sexual assaults. Operating in the Tyne and Wear area, Omer's predatory behaviour came to light through investigations by Northumbria Police, leading to his trial at Newcastle Crown Court.

The court heard harrowing details of Omer's crimes, which included three counts of rape among seven sexual offences. In one particularly callous incident in November 2015, Omer spotted two women waiting for an ambulance after taking drugs. He offered them a lift to the hospital but instead drove them to his home in Eden Vale, Sunderland. There, he released one woman but took the other inside, where he raped her. Police later discovered the victim unconscious in his house, highlighting the extreme danger Omer posed to those in vulnerable states.

Omer denied all charges during the trial but was found guilty on every count by the jury. The judge at Newcastle Crown Court sentenced him to 20 years in prison, with an additional eight years of extended licence conditions upon his release to protect the public from further harm. Following the sentencing, a Northumbria Police spokesman described Omer as 'twisted, sick and dangerous', underscoring the severity of his actions and the relief that he would be off the streets for a significant period.

The case, reported by the BBC on 20 April 2018, drew attention to the ongoing risks faced by vulnerable individuals and the importance of police vigilance in such matters. Omer's modus operandi involved driving around in his car to seek out potential victims, exploiting their situations for his own gratification. This comprehensive account is based on court proceedings at Newcastle Crown Court and statements from Northumbria Police.
