Offence Summary

Glenn Trevor Williams, a serial offender, was jailed for ten years after raping and sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl at his flat in Bexhill, following an encounter where he exploited their vulnerability by offering help with accommodation and work.

Full Description

A serial offender, Glenn Trevor Williams, aged 62, has been sentenced to a total of 15 years under an extended sentence for the rape and sexual assault of a teenage girl in Bexhill, East Sussex. The incident occurred in July 2018 when Williams encountered the 17-year-old victim and her then-boyfriend in Warrior Square, St Leonards, where they appeared distressed. Taking advantage of their vulnerability, Williams invited the couple back to his flat under the pretence of assisting them in finding accommodation and employment.

Once at the flat, Williams plied the pair with alcohol, which they later reported felt spiked with a drug that induced rapid sleepiness. As the girl attempted to sleep, Williams raped and sexually assaulted her, subsequently taking an indecent photograph of her. The couple's suspicions about the spiked drinks were noted in their statements to police, highlighting the manipulative tactics employed by Williams.

Detective Constable Liz Brunt of the East Sussex Safeguarding Investigations Unit described Williams as 'a manipulative and opportunistic predator'. She emphasised his extensive criminal history, stating: 'Williams has many previous convictions for theft and violence, including two for sexual offences involving children. He had been convicted of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child for which he received six months' imprisonment. In 2018 he was convicted of inciting a female child under 16 to engage in a sexual act. For this he received a four-year custodial sentence.'

Williams, who was unemployed at the time, was found guilty of the charges relating to the teenage girl but not guilty of a separate count of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old man. His sentence comprises ten years in custody followed by five years of extended licence supervision. Additionally, he has been placed on the sex offenders' register for life and issued with an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) that severely restricts his access to children. The case was investigated by Sussex Police, with the conviction attributed in large part to the evidence provided by the victim and her former boyfriend.
