Russell Conn, a 62-year-old man from Ayrshire, has been convicted of multiple child sexual offences over a period spanning nearly three decades. Working as a football coach for over 26 years, as well as in roles such as a carer in a boys' residential school, bus driver, truck driver, and painter and decorator, Conn exploited his positions of trust to gain access to young boys. His latest conviction at the High Court in Glasgow in July 2025 resulted in a seven-year custodial sentence, following his earlier conviction in 2022 for similar offences.
The offences detailed in court included Conn raping one youngster and sexually assaulting two others, bringing the total number of confirmed victims to seven across his two trials. The abuse began as early as 1995 with his first known victim and continued until 2021. Much of the abuse occurred in towns across Ayrshire, including Stevenston, where Conn lured one victim to his home after spotting him with his dog. Other incidents took place in Conn's work vans and properties, with victims often targeted when alone. Prosecutors highlighted how Conn, described as a 'cold and calculated sex offender', engineered situations to isolate boys, leaving them emotionally scarred—one victim attempted suicide as a result of the trauma.
Local residents and community members expressed fears that the confirmed victims represent only the 'tip of the iceberg', given Conn's extensive access to children through his various jobs and coaching role. One local told the Daily Record: 'He ran his football team for years and there were dozens and dozens of boys that played for that team. But he also had access to so many kids elsewhere over the years because he worked in a residential school with children who lived in it full time. Then there were his jobs as a bus driver, delivery driver and painter and decorator. He was always seeing kids and in and out of houses. There could easily be many, many more victims.'
A court source echoed these concerns, stating: 'There have been seven victims identified so far through his two court cases, but given the nature of his offending, it could easily be the tip of the iceberg. Conn is a cold and calculated sex offender, who regularly engineered opportunities and situations where he was alone with young boys and abused them. It wouldn't surprise me at all to find out he had targeted many more boys. Hopefully, if there are other victims out there, they find the strength to come forward so he can face justice.'
Following the sentencing, Detective Chief Inspector Suzanne McNulty of Police Scotland commended the victims' courage: 'Russell Conn is facing the consequences of his abhorrent actions. This outcome was made possible thanks to the victims who came forward and reported him. I commend them for the strength they have shown during the investigation and court proceedings. Our thoughts remain with them, and I hope this sentencing offers them some comfort as they move forward with their lives.' She urged any potential victims to contact authorities, emphasising Police Scotland's commitment to investigating historical sexual crimes.
Conn's first arrest occurred in 2010, but it took 12 years for him to be brought to justice in 2022 for preying on young boys. The recent trial in July 2025 confirmed additional offences, underscoring the prolonged nature of his predatory behaviour. The case has raised significant concerns in Ayrshire communities about child safety in sports and care settings.
