Offence Summary

Stuart Craig pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children after over 1,000 such images were found on his computer. He received a six-month suspended prison sentence and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Full Description

Stuart Craig, a 47-year-old resident of Lowestoft, Suffolk, appeared before Ipswich Crown Court on Friday, where he pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children. The case came to light following a tip-off from the Metropolitan Police Service, who informed Suffolk Constabulary that Craig may have been in possession of Category C indecent images of children.

On 29 August 2024, officers from Suffolk Constabulary arrived at Craig's home on London Road South in Lowestoft and seized his electronic devices. Forensic examination of a white computer tower revealed a total of 1,023 indecent images, categorised by specialist officers as follows: 50 Category A images, which are considered the most serious; 118 Category B images; and 855 Category C images. These images depicted child sexual abuse material, with 'making' interpreted under UK law to include downloading, accessing, or viewing such content, as defined by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Speaking in Craig's defence, his barrister Steven Dyble informed the court that Craig had no previous convictions and described the incident as a 'one off', assuring the judge that such behaviour would not recur. Recorder Richard Leiper KC, presiding over the case, acknowledged these factors and sentenced Craig to six months' imprisonment, suspended for 18 months. The sentence included a requirement for up to 30 days of rehabilitation activities with the probation service and the imposition of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order lasting seven years to restrict Craig's access to certain materials and monitor his activities.

The court heard that the images were discovered on Craig's personal computer, highlighting the role of inter-force intelligence sharing in combating child sexual exploitation. This case underscores the ongoing efforts by UK police forces to identify and prosecute individuals involved in the possession and distribution of indecent images of children, with Suffolk Constabulary playing a key role in the investigation and seizure of evidence.
