Full Description

A depraved paedophile from County Durham has been convicted of historic sex abuse against a teenager, in addition to possessing a vast collection of child abuse imagery. Russell Duncan Frederick Weatherley, aged 62 and residing on Parkwood Avenue in Bearpark, was arrested in 2022 by Durham Constabulary after officers uncovered thousands of horrific indecent images on his phone during an investigation into online child abuse.

The images, totalling around 15,000, included vile photographs of children, some of which depicted a specific teenager whom Weatherley had sexually assaulted. Officers traced the victim, who confirmed the abuse, providing crucial evidence that led to his prosecution. At Durham Crown Court, a jury found Weatherley guilty of six charges of sexual activity with a child and five charges of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. These convictions relate to the historic abuse, which Weatherley had denied but was unable to refute with the recovered evidence.

Weatherley initially denied 18 charges of making indecent images of children but later changed his plea to guilty on those counts, along with one charge of possessing an extreme pornographic image involving an animal. He has been remanded in custody ahead of his sentencing hearing scheduled for 18 November 2024 at the same court. The case highlights the persistence of law enforcement in tackling online child exploitation, with Detective Constable Liam Padget from Durham Constabulary's online child abuse investigation team stating: “Weatherley took advantage of a vulnerable girl and portrayed himself as a knight in shining armour, while all the time he was in fact sexually abusing her. Weatherley represents a real danger to children and thought he had got away with his crimes but his shameful past has finally caught up with him.”

Further details from the investigation revealed that Weatherley not only possessed massive amounts of depraved child abuse material but also recorded his own grotesque abuse of the victim. DC Padget added: “This has weighed heavily on the victim for many years who has been so courageous in helping with the investigation and we hope can now see justice at last.” The case was reported by Chronicle Live on 4 October 2024, underscoring the long-term impact of such offences and the importance of victims coming forward, regardless of the time elapsed.
