Full Description

A Bedford man, Carlton Lancelot-Mungofa, has been jailed for more than five years after committing a serious sexual offence against a woman. The incident occurred in January 2021 at a house where a group of people had gathered. Lancelot-Mungofa, known to the victim only as 'Carlito', sexually assaulted the woman and attempted to rape her during the evening.

Immediately following the assault, the victim contacted her mother and disclosed the traumatic events. Her mother promptly informed the police, leading to an investigation by Bedfordshire Police’s Rape and Serious Sexual Offences (RASSO) team. Officers identified and arrested Lancelot-Mungofa shortly thereafter. The investigation culminated in a four-day trial at Luton Crown Court, where the jury deliberated for just two and a half hours before finding the 27-year-old guilty of attempted rape.

On Thursday, 5 March 2026, Lancelot-Mungofa was sentenced to five and a half years' imprisonment. The sentencing reflected the gravity of his predatory actions, as highlighted by Detective Sergeant Joanna Tyrrell from the RASSO team, who stated: “This was a terrifying ordeal for the victim, and I want to commend her courage in coming forward and supporting the investigation. Today’s sentence reflects the seriousness of Lancelot-Mungofa’s actions and sends a clear message that this behaviour will not be tolerated.”

The victim provided a poignant victim personal statement detailing the profound impact of the assault on her life. She described: “When all this happened, I lost what I thought was a good part of my life surrounded by friends, going out, having drinks, and just enjoying life. Nights out were always full of laughter and never ended badly, until the night everything changed. After that happened, it felt like I lost all of it. The people I was closest to started seeing me differently, as if that one moment defined me. I will never get that time back. My life has felt like it has been on pause and I don’t know if it will ever be the same again or if I will ever fully recover from this.” This case underscores Bedfordshire Police's commitment to tackling violence against women and girls, ensuring perpetrators are brought to justice.
