Offence Summary

Christopher Aylward arranged and facilitated child sex offences, believing he was meeting a 14-year-old girl set up by paedophile hunters.

Full Description

Christopher Aylward, from Tadworth, was sentenced to 15 months in jail for arranging and facilitating child sex offences. Unbeknownst to him, he had been communicating with members of the vigilante group Chris Fear, who posed as a fictional 14-year-old girl online, leading to his arrest upon attempting to meet.

The case began when Aylward engaged in online conversations that escalated to planning a sexual encounter with what he believed was a minor. The paedophile hunters, operating independently, gathered evidence of these exchanges and alerted Surrey Police, who then took over the investigation. Aylward was filmed arriving at the arranged meeting point, providing key evidence for the prosecution.

At Guildford Crown Court in March 2016, Aylward pleaded guilty to the charges. The judge noted the predatory intent demonstrated in the communications, despite the decoy nature of the operation. This sentence serves as a deterrent against attempts to groom children online.
