Full Description

David Neil Cook, a 62-year-old man from West Knighton, Dorset, has been sentenced to 19 years' imprisonment for historical child sex offences committed in the early 1990s. The offences, which involved a single female child victim, took place between April 1991 and April 1993. Cook was found guilty following a trial at Winchester Crown Court, where a jury convicted him of two counts of rape, one count of indecent assault, and one count of indecency with a child.

The case came to light in 2019 when the victim, who was a child at the time of the abuse, disclosed the offences to the police. This courageous report led to Cook's arrest and subsequent charging. Initially, Cook pleaded not guilty during an appearance at Bournemouth Crown Court, and his case proceeded to trial at Winchester Crown Court. The trial concluded in October of the previous year with the jury delivering guilty verdicts on all four charges. Sentencing occurred this month at the same court, where the judge imposed a total of 19 years' custody, reflecting the severity of the historical sexual abuse.

The victim, demonstrating immense courage throughout the process, shared her experience with the Dorset Echo, explaining the long-term impact of the abuse. She stated: 'I was too young to realise what was going on, what he was making me do.' Despite the difficulties endured during the investigation and trial, she expressed relief that the case had concluded and satisfaction with the sentence. The victim also urged other survivors not to remain silent, saying: 'People shouldn't keep secrets, they should not be ashamed, and they will be believed.'

Detective Constable Mandy Lawrence from Dorset Police’s Child Abuse Investigation Team commended the victim's bravery in coming forward. In a statement, she remarked: 'The victim showed immense courage in coming forward to report what happened to them to police. I am pleased that following our investigation, David Cook is now behind bars for his unacceptable behaviour.' The investigation was thorough, leading to Cook's conviction and ensuring accountability for the crimes committed over two decades ago. This case underscores the commitment of Dorset Police to pursuing justice in historical child sex abuse matters, providing support to victims and holding perpetrators accountable regardless of the time elapsed.
