Offence Summary

Timothy Dennis, a school worker in Basildon, Essex, was jailed for over four years after admitting to sexually abusing a teenage pupil through graphic communications, causing her to engage in sexual activity, and creating indecent images of a child.

Full Description

Timothy Dennis, a 43-year-old school worker from Southend, Essex, was sentenced to four years and eight months in prison at Southend Crown Court for a series of sexual offences against a teenage pupil at a secondary school in the Basildon borough.

Dennis, who resided on North Avenue in Southend, began a relationship with the schoolgirl while employed at the unnamed school. He admitted to engaging in sexual communication with a child, causing a teenage girl to engage in sexual activity, and making indecent images of a child. The court heard that Dennis sent graphic messages detailing sexual acts he wished to perform on the victim and acts he wanted her to perform. Among the indecent images created, there were 17 category C images and seven category B images.

The offences came to light after concerns were raised about Dennis's behaviour, leading to his immediate suspension from the school. Essex County Council confirmed that all safeguarding procedures were followed, with the school working closely with the local authority and other partners. A spokesperson for the council stated: 'We are aware of the sentencing of an ex-member of school staff at Southend Crown Court. We can confirm this staff member was suspended as soon as concerns were raised and the school followed all safeguarding procedures and policies, working closely with the council as the local authority and other relevant partners. As always, the safety and wellbeing of pupils remains the priority.'

Dennis pleaded guilty to all charges on 2 October. His sentencing took place on 15 December at Southend Crown Court before Judge Richard Conley. In addition to the custodial sentence, Dennis was notified that he will or may be subject to barring from working with children. A sexual harm prevention order was imposed, lasting until 2035, which prohibits him from having unsupervised contact with any child under 18 and restricts his access to devices and social media.

The case was investigated by Essex Police’s Child Abuse Investigation Team, highlighting their role in handling complex child abuse reports.
