Offence Summary

John Kirton, a pensioner from Rookhope, was convicted of six charges of indecent assault on a child and jailed for six years for historic sexual abuse committed decades ago against a young girl.

Full Description

A pensioner from Weardale has been sentenced to six years in prison following his conviction for the historic sexual abuse of a girl that occurred several decades ago. John Kirton, aged 78 and residing in Hogarth Terrace, Rookhope, was found guilty at Teesside Crown Court of six counts of indecent assault on a child. The offences took place over multiple occasions, with the victim reporting the abuse to authorities at the time, though initial investigations were not pursued vigorously.

Prosecutor Joe Culley outlined the case during the trial, where the jury heard evidence from the victim who came forward again in 2022 to report the long-standing abuse to Durham Constabulary. In her victim impact statement, the woman described the profound and lasting effects of Kirton's actions on her life. 'Over the years, I would drink to excess in an attempt to cope, and I turned to recreational drugs for some escapism. There was a period of 18 months to two years where I was just drunk all the time,' she stated, highlighting the devastating impact that persisted into adulthood.

Judge Jonathan Carroll, presiding over the sentencing, addressed Kirton's grooming behaviour directly. 'You undoubtedly groomed her,' the judge remarked. 'You started in a way to build confidence and support and then that led to significantly more serious offending. There is a measure of persistence in your behaviour.' The court heard that after the first two incidents, the victim had raised the alarm, but the matter was brushed off, allowing the abuse to continue on at least six occasions. The judge noted the tragedy of the authorities' failure to act decisively at the time, attributing it possibly to the era's attitudes or downplaying by Kirton himself.

Mitigating on behalf of Kirton, Joel Wooten emphasised that his client had been of good character prior to the conviction. He acknowledged the significant psychological harm in such cases involving a substantial time lapse between the offences and the trial, and recognised that the victim had been let down not only by the defendant but also by early authorities who seemingly ignored her reports.

Upon sentencing, Kirton was ordered to serve a total of six years in custody and to register indefinitely on the sex offenders' register upon his release. The case, reported by Graeme Hetherington for The Northern Echo, underscores the long-term consequences of historic child sexual abuse and the importance of thorough investigations, as practices have evolved since the incidents occurred.
