Full Description

A 74-year-old man from Hailsham, East Sussex, has been imprisoned following his conviction for sexually assaulting a young girl. Peter Victor Streeter, residing on Greenwich Road, was sentenced at Brighton Crown Court on Friday, 7 November 2025, after admitting to three counts of sexual assault against an 11-year-old victim known to him.

The offences occurred in September 2022 during a gathering in Chichester, West Sussex, where both Streeter and the victim were present. The assault took place over the victim's clothing, and shortly afterwards, the brave child disclosed the incident to family members. They confronted Streeter, who denied any involvement, insisting that the girl was mistaken.

Streeter initially pleaded not guilty during early court proceedings. However, on the first day of his scheduled trial, 8 September 2025, he changed his plea to guilty, admitting the three offences. The court imposed a custodial sentence of 84 months' imprisonment, which was reduced to 75 months due to his early guilty plea. Additionally, Streeter was made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 10 years and will remain on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

Detective Constable Tania Snashall, from Sussex Police’s Iris Team and the officer in charge of the investigation, commended the victim's courage in speaking out. In a statement released by Sussex Police, she said: “It is only down to the bravery of the young victim in this case speaking out, who was only 11 years old at the time, that the offending of this man came to light. The fact that Streeter chose to deny the offences until the day of trial speaks volumes of his inability to accept responsibility for what he had done.”

DC Snashall further noted the supportive role of the victim's family throughout the investigation, despite its duration, and highlighted the judge's recognition of the profound impact on the child. “No sentence will ever be able to give the victim those childhood years back but I hope that this sentence allows her and her family to begin rebuilding their lives,” she added. The case underscores the importance of child protection efforts within the community, with Sussex Police emphasising their commitment to pursuing such offenders.
