Full Description

Theodore Kenney, 56, from St Cleer in Cornwall, was jailed at Truro Crown Court on 5 September 2025 for actual bodily harm (ABH) after a violent altercation with his neighbour. The incident stemmed from an ongoing dispute over a shared grassy strip between their properties on Penhale Lane. On 13 June 2025, Kenney's neighbour began strimming his half of the grass, prompting Kenney to confront him aggressively.

According to Ring doorbell footage presented in court, the neighbour dropped the strimmer and pushed Kenney in the chest upon confrontation. Kenney responded by punching his neighbour in the face and head 30 to 35 times in under a minute, continuing the assault even after the victim fell to the ground. The victim's partner, daughter, and step-daughter witnessed the attack and screamed for it to stop. The neighbour suffered a broken nose, facial cuts with permanent scarring, and significant psychological trauma affecting his family.

Kenney's defence barrister explained that the assault was impulsive, triggered by six months of neighbourly tensions, including failed attempts to resolve issues through housing association Coastline. Kenney expressed remorse for the impact on his wife and son, who now face eviction proceedings. However, the court noted his extensive criminal history, including violence in the 1980s and 1990s, a prior prison term, and a 2019 conviction for possessing indecent images of children. Despite a relatively law-abiding period since, Recorder Richard Paige deemed the response excessive beyond self-defence.

  • In a victim impact statement, the neighbour said: 'My step-daughter had been due to go to her prom but ended up with a photo of her step-dad and his injuries when it should have been a happy moment.'
  • 'There was a degree of provocation... Mr Kenney is remorseful,' argued the barrister.

Kenney pleaded guilty to ABH. The judge highlighted the assault's brutality and its occurrence on Kenney's doorstep, sentencing him to immediate custody. A five-year restraining order was imposed, prohibiting contact with the victim.
