Full Description

Neil Wilkin, a 55-year-old man from Colchester, Essex, was sentenced to three years in prison at Ipswich Crown Court on 28 November 2025, following his conviction for attempting to engage in sexual communications with a child and attempting to arrange a child sex offence.

The offences occurred in 2022 when Wilkin used an online chat room to discuss and plan sexual activities involving a teenage girl. He believed he was communicating with the mother of a 13-year-old girl, but the other user was in fact an undercover police officer from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, working in collaboration with Essex Police. During the conversations, Wilkin expressed intentions to meet and engage in sexual acts with the child, demonstrating predatory behaviour targeting a vulnerable minor.

In November 2022, following the incriminating exchanges, Wilkin was arrested at his home on Rose Allen Avenue in Colchester. Officers seized electronic devices found at the property, and a forensic examination uncovered conversation threads with the undercover officer, despite Wilkin's attempts to delete them. When interviewed, Wilkin denied the allegations, claiming in a prepared statement that his online communications were merely 'fantasy'. However, after a three-day trial in October 2025, the jury rejected his defence and found him guilty on both counts.

Judge Kelly, presiding over the sentencing, described Wilkin's defence as a 'pack of lies' and highlighted the seriousness of his actions. In addition to the three-year custodial sentence, Wilkin was placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely and received a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order to restrict his future behaviour and protect the public, particularly children.

Detective Sergeant Nicola Hadfield of Essex Police, who led the joint investigation, stated: “Wilkin is a sexual predator who preyed on the vulnerability of someone who he believed was only 13 years old. His deviant behaviour was stopped by collaborative working by police here in Essex and in the Midlands. We will be managing him as a sexual offender upon his release, and he will be closely monitored. Safeguarding children and keeping them safe is our priority and we will relentlessly pursue offenders and bring them before the courts.” The case underscores the effectiveness of undercover operations in preventing child sexual exploitation.
