Charles Benson-Clark, a 30-year-old man formerly residing in Clavering, Saffron Walden, was sentenced at Chelmsford Crown Court on 21 November 2025 for committing serious sexual offences against a young girl. The case came to light in September 2022 when inappropriate messages were discovered on the victim's phone, prompting an immediate arrest by Essex Police.
Following his arrest, Benson-Clark was questioned by officers regarding his relationship with the underage victim and the allegations levelled against him. However, he refused to answer any questions during the interview. Essex Police conducted a long and detailed investigation, which ultimately led to him being charged with four counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child, including two counts of penetrative sexual activity. Benson-Clark admitted to all charges when he appeared in court.
On the day of sentencing, Benson-Clark, who was by then an inmate at HMP Chelmsford, received a custodial sentence of six years and six months. In addition to the imprisonment, the court imposed an indefinite restraining order to protect the victim and a 10-year sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) to restrict his future behaviour and mitigate risks to the public.
Detective Constable George Lakey, the investigating officer from Essex Police, commended the bravery of the victim and her mother throughout the ordeal. He described Benson-Clark's predatory and manipulative behaviour as abhorrent, noting that the offender was fully aware of the victim's underage status and acted solely in his own interests. Lakey expressed hope that the sentence would provide closure for the family and encouraged other potential victims to come forward, assuring that all reports of sexual offences are treated with utmost seriousness.
The victim's mother also shared her reflections on the challenging process, stating that it had taken a significant toll on her family but that justice had finally been served. She highlighted the manipulative tactics employed by Benson-Clark, which had prevented her daughter from disclosing the abuse earlier, and emphasised her determination to support others in similar situations moving forward.
This case underscores the diligent work of Essex Police in pursuing justice for child sexual abuse victims, with the sentencing serving as a stark reminder of the severe consequences for those who exploit vulnerable young people.
