Offence Summary

Jack Karl Thomas Williams brutally raped a woman in her 60s on a beach in Rhyl after kidnapping and assaulting her while under the influence of drink and drugs.

Full Description

A harrowing attack unfolded on a beach in Rhyl, North Wales, where 19-year-old Jack Karl Thomas Williams subjected a woman in her 60s to a brutal rape and assault. The incident, which occurred on August 27, 2016, left the victim with severe injuries and lasting trauma, as detailed in proceedings at Mold Crown Court.

The victim had left her home at approximately 4:40am to walk her dog near a railway station when she encountered Williams, who was consuming alcohol from a bottle or can. Williams inquired about the time before following her and launching a violent assault. According to prosecutor Andrew Green, Williams placed his arm across the victim's neck and face in a vice-like grip, restricting her ability to breathe or call for help. The victim, petrified and unable to resist due to his strength, believed she was moments from being strangled.

Williams forced the woman to the ground, causing a head injury that resulted in blood staining her clothing. He then dragged her up a concrete slope to the pebbled beach area, threatening that she would end up in the sea once he had 'finished' with her. Ignoring her pleas, including a reference to what his mother might think, Williams kicked her dog away and proceeded with the sexual attack, which involved three counts of rape. Throughout the ordeal, the victim feared for her life, feeling powerless and convinced of her impending death.

A passer-by's intervention provided a narrow escape; upon spotting the individual, Williams fled as the victim screamed for help. She was found in a distraught state, described as 'completely distraught' by the passer-by who assisted her. The woman sustained serious injuries, including a fractured eye socket, lacerations, bruising, and scratches, and later expressed in a victim impact statement: 'My life has changed and I honestly feel it will never be the same for me or my family again. This horrendous experience will only end when I am in the grave.' She described daily tearfulness, vivid flashbacks, and a pervasive sense of vulnerability, stating, 'I remember the feeling of being powerless. I thought I was going to die that day.'

Williams was arrested nearby at 6:30am, having admitted to drinking and taking drugs earlier that evening. He had been intending to travel to Manchester but was removed from a train for lacking a ticket. Initially denying involvement, Williams later pleaded guilty to kidnapping, holding the woman against her will, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, and three charges of rape. Defence counsel Matthew Curtis described the crime as committed by an 'immature and emotionally damaged young man' who had suffered childhood neglect, expressing outrage at his own actions.

Judge Rhys Rowlands, sentencing on November 10, 2016, condemned the attack, noting that photographs of the victim's injuries would incite anger in anyone viewing them. Williams received a 12-year detention sentence, of which he must serve two-thirds, followed by two years on licence. He was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life and subjected to a 10-year restraining order barring him from approaching the victim or entering her town of residence. The case was reported by North Wales Live, highlighting the profound impact on the victim and community.
