Offence Summary

Ameer Tahir, a man from Brighton, was jailed for 13 years after stalking and harassing nearly 60 women with hundreds of threatening phone calls, including obscene threats of rape and other violent sexual acts.

Full Description

Ameer Tahir, a resident of Brighton, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison at Lewes Crown Court for a series of stalking offences that terrorised nearly 60 women across the country. The court heard how Tahir made hundreds of malicious and threatening phone calls to his victims using a withheld number, subjecting them to obscene threats including rape and other violent sexual acts. This campaign of harassment caused significant distress to the women, many of whom suffered enormously as a result of his actions.

Initially charged with 13 counts of stalking, the case expanded dramatically when police discovered an additional mobile phone in Tahir's flat during their investigation. This device revealed dozens more victims, highlighting the extensive reach of his predatory behaviour. Tahir had obtained the contact details of many of his targets through mutual acquaintances and his employment in the hospitality industry, allowing him to infiltrate the lives of unsuspecting women from various parts of the UK.

Sussex Police played a pivotal role in bringing Tahir to justice. In a statement, the force expressed satisfaction with the severity of the sentence imposed by the judge, noting the profound impact on the victims. Crime Investigator Lucia Calandriello from Sussex Police spoke to ITV News Meridian about the case, emphasising the relief felt by those affected now that Tahir is behind bars. The investigation uncovered the full extent of his operations, leading to his arrest, as captured in footage released by the police showing the moment Tahir was taken into custody.

The sentence comprises nine years in custody followed by four years on extended licence, ensuring close monitoring upon his eventual release. This outcome serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of stalking and the commitment of law enforcement to protect vulnerable individuals from such threats. Sources close to the case, including reports from ITV News Meridian dated 10 May 2023, confirm the details of the offences and the judicial response.
