Offence Summary

Brian Wareham, a former Army worker, was jailed for raping a woman in Royal Wootton Bassett and for stalking her shortly afterwards.

Full Description

Brian Wareham, a 52-year-old man from Reynolds Court, Andover, Hampshire, who previously worked for the Army repairing helicopters in Wiltshire, has been sentenced to five years and six months in prison for raping a woman in Royal Wootton Bassett.

The incident occurred on August 4, 2024, when Wareham raped the victim in the town. Following the assault, between August 4 and August 11, 2024, he engaged in stalking behaviour, which included driving past her home address, attempting to contact her mobile phone, sending unwanted messages, loitering around her property, sending messages via third parties, and monitoring her social media applications. This caused the victim fear, alarm, or distress.

Wareham had initially pleaded not guilty to charges of rape and stalking at Swindon Magistrates' Court on November 11, 2024. However, he was found guilty of rape at Swindon Crown Court on September 17, 2025. The stalking charge was left on file and did not result in a conviction.

During the sentencing hearing at Swindon Crown Court on January 2, 2026, Judge Taylor imposed the custodial sentence. In addition to the prison term, Wareham must sign onto the sex offenders' register indefinitely. A restraining order was also issued, prohibiting him from contacting the victim directly or indirectly, including via social media. Furthermore, an exclusion zone was established, banning him from entering certain areas of Royal Wootton Bassett.

The case was reported by the Swindon Advertiser, with details confirmed through court records and statements from Wiltshire Police, who provided the image used in coverage of the sentencing.
