David Carrick

David Carrick, a former Metropolitan Police officer from Salisbury, has been identified as a prolific sex offender following his guilty pleas to numerous sexual crimes. In 2022 and 2023, Carrick admitted to 71 instances of sexual violence against 12 different women over a 17-year period, including 48 rapes, attempted rapes, indecent assaults, assaults by penetration, and sexual assaults. He also confessed to three counts of controlling and coercive behaviour towards women. These admissions led to his sentencing in 2023, where he received a whole-life order, ensuring he will spend the remainder of his life in prison.

The case gained significant attention due to Carrick's position of authority as a police officer, which he exploited to perpetrate his crimes. Originally from Salisbury and formerly residing in Stevenage, Carrick worked for the Metropolitan Police from 2001. His conviction highlighted systemic failures within the force, with prosecutors noting how his role shielded him from scrutiny for years.

Currently, Carrick is standing trial at the Old Bailey for further allegations. He faces two charges of rape, one count of sexual assault, and coercive and controlling behaviour towards a woman between 2014 and 2019. Additionally, he is charged with five counts of sexual assault relating to a 12-year-old girl in the late 1980s. Carrick has pleaded not guilty to all these charges. During police interviews at Full Sutton prison in Yorkshire in November 2023, Carrick denied the woman's claims, asserting that their sexual encounters were consensual and attributing her allegations to the 'Me Too movement'. He claimed she was always in charge and that he would have stopped if she said no.

Carrick also dismissed allegations of sexually abusing the 12-year-old girl, stating that Wiltshire Constabulary had investigated the matter at the time and that records existed. However, prosecutor Tom Little KC informed the jury that checks with Wiltshire Police revealed no records of any investigation into the girl's allegations in 1989 or 1990. Carrick further alleged corruption within Hertfordshire Police, claiming they failed to investigate when the woman allegedly assaulted him and caused criminal damage to his home, which ended their relationship. In that incident, police had listed him as a suspect for domestic assault.

The trial, presided over by Mrs Justice McGowan, was adjourned until 17 November. Neither of the alleged victims can be identified for legal reasons. Carrick's defence maintains that the new accusations are fabricated, but the prosecution emphasises the pattern of his previous admitted offences. This ongoing case underscores the gravity of his history as a convicted sex offender.
