Offence Summary

Darren Jarrett, a paedophile from Sunderland, engaged in sexual communication with someone he believed to be a 14-year-old boy by sending explicit images and voice notes of himself masturbating, but was actually communicating with an undercover police officer. He was sentenced to a 12-month suspended prison term, a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and a 10-year Sex Notification requirement.

Full Description

A Sunderland man, Darren Jarrett, aged 42, was sentenced following an investigation into his online sexual communications with a decoy posing as a child. The case, handled by the North East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU), highlighted the dangers of online grooming and the effectiveness of proactive policing in preventing child sexual exploitation.

Jarrett, residing on Margate Street in Sunderland, began communicating online in March 2025 with an individual he believed to be a 14-year-old boy. Unbeknownst to him, this was an undercover officer from NEROCU as part of a broader investigation into child sexual offenders. Over the following months, Jarrett sent multiple sexually explicit images and voice notes, including recordings of himself masturbating. He also exchanged countless messages detailing his interactions with other alleged individuals, demonstrating a pattern of predatory behaviour.

The communications escalated to the point where Jarrett discussed inciting sexual activity with the supposed child. In June 2025, officers arrested Jarrett and seized several electronic devices from his home, which provided further evidence of his actions. He was charged with engaging in sexual communication with a child and causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. Jarrett later pleaded guilty to all charges at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court.

On Thursday, prior to the publication of the article on 27 March 2026, Jarrett appeared in court for sentencing. He received a 12-month imprisonment sentence, suspended for 24 months, along with a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a 10-year requirement to notify police of his whereabouts under sex offender registration. NEROCU Detective Constable Georgina Lewis commented on the case, stating: “Jarrett sent extremely explicit messages and voice messages, even when he believed he was talking to a child. He is a dangerous predator and thankfully, this investigation has led to a successful outcome at court.”

The sentencing underscores the commitment of UK law enforcement to combat online child sexual offences, with NEROCU playing a key role in identifying and apprehending individuals like Jarrett who pose a risk to children.
