Offence Summary

Sam Burton raped a baby, filmed the abuse, and possessed a large collection of indecent images of children, including doctored images with heads of known individuals pasted onto victims.

Full Description

A 23-year-old man from Abingdon, Oxfordshire, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for committing heinous sexual offences against a baby and possessing extensive child sex abuse material. Sam Burton, described by the victim's mother as a 'monster to the innocent', carried out the depraved acts and recorded them, leading to his eventual arrest and conviction at Oxford Crown Court.

The case came to light last year when police discovered a disturbing video on Burton's iPad showing him performing a sex act in front of a sleeping child. Further investigation by Thames Valley Police revealed a vast collection of child sex abuse images and videos on the device. This included footage of Burton raping a baby, explicit videos involving a teenage girl he had previously been in a relationship with, and manipulated photographs where he had pasted the heads of children and an adult known to him onto images of sex abuse victims. In total, authorities found 299 category A images and videos, 211 in category B, and 471 in category C, indicating systematic searches and downloads from the internet.

Prosecutor Michael Williams detailed the evidence during the trial, highlighting the severity of Burton's actions. Despite the overwhelming proof, pre-sentence reports from a psychiatrist and probation officer noted that Burton denied any sexual interest in children and could not explain his behaviour. His defence, represented by Matthew Rowcliffe, argued that Burton was remorseful, had been suffering from depression, and was heavily using drugs at the time of the offences.

Judge Nigel Daly, presiding over the case, condemned Burton's actions as 'so depraved that, quite frankly, they defy belief'. He imposed an extended sentence of 14 years, with Burton required to serve at least two-thirds behind bars before eligibility for release, followed by an additional four years on licence. The judge emphasised that recording the acts ultimately led to Burton's downfall. In addition to the custodial sentence, Burton must comply with a sexual harm prevention order and a restraining order for life, and he will be on the sex offenders' register indefinitely.

The victim's mother, who cannot be named for legal reasons, addressed Burton directly in court, stating: 'I hope you suffer for what you have done.' Burton, of Sellwood Road, Abingdon, pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity to charges of rape of a child under 13, sexual activity with a child, and making indecent images of children. The sentencing occurred on Monday at Oxford Crown Court, as reported by the Oxford Mail.
