Full Description

Maria Alfonzo, a 33-year-old woman from Devon, was sentenced to two years and three months in prison for multiple serious sexual offences, including arranging and facilitating the commission of a child sex offence. Her guilty plea in 2021 came as part of the Northumbria Police investigation into paedophile activities linked to Simon Mallen's network.

Alfonzo's offences involved distributing and taking indecent images of children, as well as engaging in bestiality, which she admitted prior to her plea on the child sex facilitation charge. The evidence was gathered through digital forensics during the 2019 operation that targeted online communications planning child abuse.

At Newcastle Crown Court in 2021, Alfonzo was jailed for her cumulative crimes, with the sentence reflecting the severity of exploiting children and producing illegal material. The case highlighted the interconnected nature of the offences uncovered by the Paedophile Online Investigation Team (POLIT).

  • Alfonzo pleaded guilty, avoiding a full trial but facing consequences for her actions.
  • Charges included child sex facilitation, indecent images, and animal sex.
  • The prosecution relied on seized devices and online evidence.

Claire Wright from the CPS described the evidence as vital in proving the predatory behaviour of those involved, including Alfonzo. Detective Inspector Allen Hull praised the forensic work that led to her prosecution, noting its role in enhancing community safety.

This case was one of several stemming from the Mallen investigation, demonstrating the reach of such criminal activities across regions.
