Offence Summary

PC Kieran Ball, a British Transport Police officer, was found guilty of voyeurism after secretly filming a woman undressing in the shower using an iPad. He faces dismissal from the force following his conviction at Warwick Crown Court.

Full Description

A British Transport Police officer from Coventry has been found guilty of voyeurism after covertly recording a woman while she showered. PC Kieran Ball, aged 30 and residing in Nuneaton, set up an iPad to film the incident on 10 June 2021 at a residential property. The court heard that Ball propped the device on a windowsill, where it recorded for nearly six minutes without the woman's knowledge.

The woman discovered the iPad during the incident and noticed it was actively recording. She promptly took a video of the device in position and reported the matter to Warwickshire Police. Ball, who was suspended from duty immediately upon the allegations surfacing, claimed in his defence at Warwick Crown Court that he had been using the iPad for personal reasons unrelated to recording the woman. However, the jury rejected his account and convicted him of voyeurism on 6 April 2023.

Following the guilty verdict, the British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed that Ball would face an accelerated misconduct hearing. Det Supt Peter Fulton, head of professional standards at BTP, stated: "There is no place for him at BTP." He further emphasised the impact of Ball's actions, saying: "His actions severely undermine the work of the many thousands of honourable police officers and staff who come to work every day to protect and help people." The BTP acted swiftly to suspend Ball as soon as the initial allegations were made, underscoring their commitment to professional standards.

Ball is scheduled to be sentenced on 24 May 2023 at Warwick Crown Court. This case highlights serious concerns regarding the conduct of law enforcement personnel and the measures in place to address misconduct within the force. The incident was reported to Warwickshire Police, who investigated the voyeurism allegation, leading to the prosecution at Warwick Crown Court.
