Full Description

George Gibbs, a 55-year-old resident of Harefield Road in Southampton, has been sentenced to 10 years and three months imprisonment following his conviction for committing child sex offences. Gibbs appeared at Southampton Crown Court, where he was found guilty of two counts of sexual assault of a child under 13. The offences, which involved two young girls, took place in Southampton between July 2018 and 27 September 2020, when the matter was first reported to the police.

The investigation was led by specialist officers from the Child Abuse Investigation Team, who conducted a thorough probe after the initial report. This resulted in Gibbs's arrest and subsequent charges. Despite denying the allegations throughout the process, Gibbs refused to attend his trial, leading to the verdict being delivered in his absence. His actions forced the young victims to relive their traumatic experiences during the proceedings, demonstrating a lack of remorse and disdain for those affected.

Detective Constable Dawn Capper from the Child Abuse Investigation Team commented on the case, stating: "Gibbs continually denied the offences, forcing his young victims to relive these traumatic experiences in the trial. To make matters worse, he refused to attend, with the verdict being reached in his absence. By doing so, Gibbs has shown complete disdain for his victims and not a shred of remorse. In contrast to his cowardice, these two victims have demonstrated such bravery throughout the investigation and I would like to commend them for their actions, which have made Southampton a safer place by removing a dangerous predator from the streets." The sentencing hearing at Southampton Crown Court marked the culmination of the police efforts to bring Gibbs to justice.

This case underscores the commitment of Hampshire Constabulary's Child Abuse Investigation Team to pursuing justice for child victims of sexual offences. The offences were reported directly to the police, prompting a specialist response that ensured the perpetrator was held accountable. Gibbs's removal from the community serves as a significant step in protecting vulnerable children in the area.
