Full Description

A Taunton man, Peter Ian Burgess, has been ordered to appear at Taunton Crown Court for sentencing following his guilty pleas to serious sexual offences involving indecent images of children and extreme pornography. The case, heard initially at Yeovil Magistrates' Court before District Judge Angela Brereton, centres on offences committed in Chard between July 11, 2021, and August 24, 2022.

Burgess, aged 20 and residing in East Reach, Taunton, admitted to four charges. He pleaded guilty to making 10 indecent photographs of children classified as Category A, the most severe category. Additionally, he confessed to two similar charges involving two Category B images and 44 Category C images, totalling over 50 pornographic pictures of children. Furthermore, Burgess admitted possession of extreme pornographic images that explicitly and realistically portrayed a person performing sexual intercourse with worms and centipedes, material deemed grossly offensive, disgusting, or obscene.

Defending solicitor Louise Eaves highlighted that Burgess was a youth at the time of the offences and urged that any pre-sentence report consider his mental health issues. The magistrates deemed the case too serious for their powers, remanding Burgess to Taunton Crown Court for sentencing on August 29. They also ordered him to register on the national Sex Offenders Register immediately.

The proceedings were adjourned on August 28 for the preparation of a pre-sentence report. This case underscores the ongoing efforts to combat the possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material in the UK, with Avon and Somerset Police involved in the investigation.
