A 20-year-old American man, Chase Heltzel, residing in Kenilworth, has been sentenced to ten months in prison for his involvement in disturbing online activities that promoted the sexual abuse of children. The case, heard at Warwick Crown Court, centred on Heltzel's guilty pleas to attempting to arrange or facilitate the sexual abuse of a child, three counts of making indecent images of children, and one count of distributing such images.
According to prosecutor Gerry Bermingham, the investigation began in October 2016 when police were called to Heltzel's flat. Officers seized several items, including a laptop, which contained indecent movies and still images of children. Further examination revealed evidence that Heltzel had sent these images to others. Most alarmingly, chat logs showed Heltzel engaging with an individual known as 'Ozguy85' in explicit discussions about abusing children. In these exchanges, Heltzel fantasised about a young girl engaging in sexual acts with her older brother and expressed interest in viewing acts that Ozguy85 claimed to have committed with his eight-year-old sister.
Judge Andrew Lockhart QC, presiding over the case, described the conversations as 'discussing abusing a child in the most appalling way.' He emphasised the real harm caused by such behaviour, noting that the images circulated online perpetuate victimisation. 'You do understand that this type of behaviour you have engaged in does have victims, and real victims,' the judge told Heltzel. 'Those images on the internet find their way onto numerous computers of people who have the same proclivities that you do.' The judge concluded that Heltzel's actions demonstrated 'proclivities towards the serious abuse and rape of children of tender years.'
Defence barrister Richard Davenport argued that the discussions might have been mere fantasy, questioning whether Ozguy85's claims about abusing his sister were real. He highlighted Heltzel's intelligence, noting that he was pursuing a doctorate in the UK, and mentioned his ongoing private counselling. Davenport requested a suspended sentence, pointing to Heltzel's support from his retired teacher father who had travelled from America. However, the judge imposed the custodial term, along with a requirement for Heltzel to register as a sex offender for ten years.
Following his arrest, Heltzel's personal life unravelled; his fiancée ended their relationship and upcoming marriage due to the offences. At the time of sentencing in December 2017, Heltzel had relocated to Kensington Road in Coventry. The case underscores the dangers of online platforms in facilitating child sexual exploitation, with police evidence pivotal in uncovering the extent of Heltzel's activities.
