Full Description

On the evening of 18 November 2023, Heilab Assefa, a 29-year-old resident of London Road in Croydon, south London, met a young woman for the first time. What began as a casual encounter quickly escalated into a horrific assault around midnight, as Assefa launched a violent attack on the woman outside his home. The assault involved grievous bodily harm and multiple sexual offences, including two counts of sexual assault by penetration and one count of sexual assault. Disturbingly, Assefa filmed the entire incident, capturing his predatory actions on video.

Local residents reported the assault to the police, prompting officers from the Metropolitan Police Service to respond immediately. Upon arrival at the scene on London Road, they tackled and arrested Assefa on the spot, preventing further harm to the victim. Forensics experts and detectives swiftly gathered evidence, including the incriminating footage, leading to Assefa being charged the very next day, 19 November 2023.

Assefa appeared at Croydon Crown Court in June 2024, where he pleaded guilty to all charges: grievous bodily harm, two counts of sexual assault by penetration, and one count of sexual assault. The court proceedings highlighted the brutality of the attack and its profound impact on the victim-survivor. On 1 October 2024, Judge [Name not specified in article] sentenced Assefa to 14 years and four months' imprisonment, a term that reflects the severity of his crimes and serves as a deterrent to similar offenders.

  • The assault occurred after Assefa lured the woman to his address, turning predatory within hours of their meeting.
  • Police intervention was crucial, with officers acting on public reports to apprehend him immediately.
  • Evidence collection was thorough, involving digital forensics from the filmed attack.

Detective Sergeant Tim Walter of the Metropolitan Police commented on the sentencing: "Assefa is a dangerous sexual predator who targeted the victim-survivor whilst she was outside his address. This sentence sends a clear message to would-be offenders - the police will actively pursue and prosecute offenders using the full extent of the law." He further emphasised the broader implications, noting that "Violence against women and girls has a profound and long-lasting impact on those affected. Such violence affects local communities and impacts how safe people feel where they live, and how confident they are in their local police." The Metropolitan Police's commitment to safeguarding victims and tackling such crimes remains unwavering, as evidenced by their rapid response and successful prosecution in this case. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges of violence against women in urban areas like Croydon.
