Full Description

James Oak, a 37-year-old man from Southampton, was sentenced to five years and seven months in prison after pleading guilty to serious sexual offences against a child. The case, investigated by Hampshire Constabulary, centred on incidents that occurred in October 2023, when Oak sent a series of grossly explicit messages to a 12-year-old victim.

Oak's communications included requests for the child to send sexual images, meet him in person, and engage in sexual acts. These actions led to charges of inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity and sexual communication with a child. The offences were heard at Southampton Crown Court on Friday, 7 November 2024, where Oak entered guilty pleas.

In addition to his custodial sentence, Oak was made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a restraining order. He was also required to notify his details to the police under the Sexual Offences Act 2003 and will remain on the sex offenders register for life. The concurrent 12-month sentence for the sexual communication charge was served alongside the primary term.

PC Jen Grace, who led the investigation for Hampshire Constabulary, commented on the case: "Oak's sentencing marks the end of an incredibly difficult chapter for a brave young girl and her family. The strength and courage she has shown throughout this investigation has been nothing short of extraordinary." She further noted that while the sentencing could not erase the trauma, it provided closure and ensured Oak could no longer pose a threat to children.

The court proceedings highlighted the predatory nature of Oak's behaviour, with the explicit content of the messages underscoring the severity of the exploitation. This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts by UK authorities to protect vulnerable children from online grooming and sexual harm.
