Offence Summary

Gerrard Stephen Jones was jailed for four and a half years after admitting to sexual activity with two young girls, voyeurism by filming a girl changing, and possessing over 1,500 indecent images of children along with extreme bestiality material.

Full Description

A 53-year-old man from Rhyl, North Wales, has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison for committing a series of serious sexual offences against vulnerable young girls and possessing illegal images. Gerrard Stephen Jones, residing on Brighton Road, appeared at Mold Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to the charges, leading to his imprisonment and lifelong registration as a sex offender.

The court heard that Jones targeted two teenage girls, engaging in sexual activity by fondling one over her clothing and another under her clothing. Additionally, he committed an act of voyeurism by secretly setting up a video camera in a room to film a girl changing her clothes for his own sexual gratification. The girl noticed a red light indicating the camera was recording and reported the incident. Judge Niclas Parry described the offences as particularly worrying, noting an element of grooming and targeting, set against a background of Jones's 'distorted fantasies' and his interest in the abuse of children.

Prosecuting barrister Anna Price detailed how complaints of a sexual nature were made by the two different teenage girls. A subsequent examination of Jones's computer revealed more than 1,500 indecent images of children and over 80 movies, many classified as extreme and involving sex acts with animals, including bestiality. Jones initially admitted to the image offences but denied the other behaviours before eventually coming to terms with his actions.

In defence, Sarah Yates highlighted Jones's guilty pleas as the best mitigation, stating he was candid and accepted full responsibility. She noted that some offences occurred under the influence of alcohol, but he had lost his family, job, and faced life-changing consequences. Despite no prior convictions or custody experience, Jones took a realistic approach to his situation. Judge Parry imposed an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, prohibiting unsupervised contact with females under 16, restricting internet use by requiring history retention, and banning file-sharing software.

The case was reported by the Rhyl Journal on 29th February 2016, based on proceedings at Mold Crown Court. 'He had targeted young girls who were vulnerable,' Judge Parry remarked, emphasising the gravity of the admissions to serious sexual offences.
